Call me old-fashioned, but I’m a sucker for an advertising jingle. I can sing most of the ads from my childhood. Jingles don’t make me feel like a consumer suckered into buying something, they actually bring a smile to my face. Positive songs and imagery stick with us. During this pandemic, there are a lot of voices, signs, and imagery that are unpleasant. For children, these stimuli can be especially confusing and even upsetting.
Wordy signs that look like diagrams may be apparent to adults, but they do not connect with children. If this current state is going to be the new normal, let’s make that new normal a kinder place. We can be friendlier in how we treat each other and how we communicate the rules.
Friendly signs, songs, and symbols connect with children and remind adults to be kinder. When we create positive messages for safety in this crisis, we are not succumbing to fear, we are choosing kindness. We are choosing to promote safety out of concern and love for each other.
